Biblical Counselling

What is Biblical Counseling?

Biblical Counselling is a form of therapy that emphasizes the teaching of the Bible as a guide for addressing emotional and psychological issues. It aims to help individuals reorient their desires and behaviors according to God’s design, fostering true worship and right relationships with others.

This approach is often seen as a discipleship process under the oversight of the local church relying on the authority of Scripture and the works of the Holy Spirit

The most obvious way to explain biblical counselling is to identify it as the provision of counsel that comes from the Bible.

Everyday we counsel — whether we know it or not.

A friend asks, “Hey, can I get your advice on something?”, or our child needs some instruction, or our spouse shares something with us, or a co-worker tells you that they are overwhelmed.

In all of these instances, we usually try to give advice or counsel from our own life experience or from what we know- either from the Bible or elsewhere.

At its core, biblical counseling is built on the belief that every follower of Jesus is called to encourage and walk alongside others in faith. However, there are times when someone may need deeper guidance, accountability, or focused discipleship from a person who has been specially trained to help.

Biblical counseling provides that support — offering Christ-centered care and practical wisdom from God’s Word to help individuals grow, heal, and find hope in every season of life.

Ready for Anything

At House of Help VZW, we have been blessed with a team of Biblical counselors (Pastors) who are equipped to deal with a wide range of life issues. They have been trained in taking the Bible’s answers and applying them to depression, anxiety, loss, problems in parenting and marriage, anger, alcohol and drug abuse, eating disorders, self-harm and a number of other issues.

We strive to be reactive and proactive in our approach, helping people with what has happened in the past and prepare them for what may come in the future. We are committed to helping people overcome life’s issues by helping them live in such a way that it will lead to abundant life (John 10:10).

Our goal is not merely to help fix feelings or to find something in the past to blame things on. Rather, we want to use the hurt, learned behavior, or set-back as a catalyst for experiencing a greater sense of inner joy, peace, fulfillment and healing. (1 Pet. 3:10-12; Ps. 34:12-13; Gen. 4:3-7; Jas. 1:25).

Change of Perspective

Circumstances are usually slow to change. Therefore, biblical counseling doesn’t just focus on trying to get a person’s circumstances to change. We try to help our counselees find a new perspective.

As we change and renew our thoughts, our behavior will follow (Rom. 12:2). By gaining a different and more biblical perspective, we can find God’s solutions for life which will produce change and lasting results. As we see things from a different perspective, we will be able to better apply God’s desire for living to our lives, and then experience life as our Creator intended it.

What We Believe

As we biblically counsel, we hold to three main convictions:

The Bible is truth and sufficient for life. The Bible says it is the only authoritative standard for life. It is helpful to teach us what is right, correct us in areas where we are wrong, encourage us when we are hopeless and present us “complete” if we will hear it and obey it (2 Tim. 3:16-17; Ps. 19:7-11; 2 Pet. 1:3).

The power of God is the only thing that can change us. As created beings, it is best for us to go back to our Creator when we are facing trials of any kind. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can access the power of God to change us from patterns that are hurtful to others, or overcome how others have hurt us (Eph. 4:20-24).

Jesus is our hope for now and forever. We believe that Jesus was sent to the world to show us the way to find lasting and eternal hope. He came to free us from the bondage that comes from a life that is not pleasing to God. By believing in Jesus Christ, and accepting that His death and resurrection are true, we can have a relationship with Him that gives us access to God and His power in our life.

What This Means for You

We are here to help you in the midst of the good days and bad days in life. Counseling is not just for broken people, but it is for all people. We have a Savior who identifies with our needs and will give us help (Heb. 4:14-16). He will use the trials in your life for your good as you respond with a biblical perspective (Rom. 5:3-5; 8:28-29; Jas. 1:2-4). Biblical counseling is here to assist you down the road of restoration and stability, which we believe, is rooted in Jesus Christ.
