Every year, thousands of international students arrive in Belgium full of ambition — yet many face unexpected isolation, financial strain, cultural disconnection, and bureaucratic barriers that quietly undermine their potential.
The International Student Support Initiative (ISSI) exists to ensure these students are seen, heard, and supported — not as temporary visitors, but as integral members of Belgium’s academic and social fabric.
Why this Matters
International students are often celebrated for their diversity and contribution to innovation. But beneath this rhetoric, many struggle with:
- Housing insecurity due to rising rents and lack of local networks
- Cultural isolation and mental health challenges compounded by language barriers
- Financial precarity, especially for non-EU students excluded from certain support systems
“We view these not as individual shortcomings, but as systemic gaps that empathy and coordinated action can bridge”.
How we Support
Wellbeing and Integration Programs
Through workshops, intercultural events, and support circles, We promotes emotional resilience, intercultural understanding, and mental health literacy.
Empathy becomes not just a value, but a skill — one that students carry forward into their studies, workplaces, and communities worldwide.

Peer-to-Peer Mentorship
We connect newly arrived international students with trained local and senior student mentors who can provide practical guidance for the academic and social welfare advancement of the new student.
From navigating Belgian administration to finding a sense of belonging, these relationships turn adaptation into community.

Resource Hubs and Advocacy
We operate a community Resource Hub — "Your go-to guide" — offering accessible information on housing rights, healthcare, scholarships, and local opportunities.
When systemic barriers arise, we advocate collaboratively with universities and policymakers for fairer, more inclusive policies.
